Research Fellow (ITD-DCD-02)

Category: Academic | Department: Department of Disease Control | Closing Date: 09 Mar 2016 | We are seeking to appoint a highly motivated Research Fellow to join a group of epidemiologists working on the control of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). The position will be based full time in Kenya, and will require substantial periods of time managing field work in Kwale.  The post-holder will contribute to an ongoing trial evaluating alternative treatment strategies for soil-transmitted helminths, and will be responsible for planning and undertaking field activities. There may also be opportunity to lead sub-studies nested within the larger trial. In addition, they will play a key role in analysing results and disseminating findings to stakeholders, including writing for publication. It is also expected that the post-holder will be keen to work flexibly and be involved in other research projects currently undertaken by the group. For further details see http://bit.ly/1HivLGM.     The successful applicant will have a PhD in epidemiology or public health, substantial fieldwork experience including managing parasitological surveys and familiarity with copro-microscopic methods, and a record of high quality publications in peer-reviewed journals. A detail-oriented approach to overseeing field work activities and managing data, protocols and daily activities is essential, together with demonstrable experience in quantitative data analysis. The candidate will need to collaborate effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team and have excellent interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written). Prior experience of conducting impact evaluations (including large-scale randomised trials) and managing large field teams in Kenya is highly desirable, as is demonstrable experience of working with local partners, such as the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI). Fluency in English and Swahili will be essential.    The post is funded by the Wellcome Trust up to 31 August 2016 in the first instance and is subject to renewal. The post is available immediately.
