Research Fellow (Social Sciences) (PHP-HSRP-04)

Category: Academic | Department: Department of Health Services Research and Policy | Closing Date: 27 Apr 2016 |  We are seeking a Research Fellow with expertise in the social sciences to work on a multidisciplinary project that will study services for women with urinary incontinence in England. This is an exciting opportunity for someone keen to make links between social science and a focused health issue.  You will join a team of researchers and clinicians who play a leading role both nationally and internationally in shaping and guiding large-scale studies of healthcare quality. The project is funded by the National Institute of Health Research and is a collaboration between the LSHTM, the University of Leicester, the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, and the British Society of Urogynaecologists. The project will assess the availability and use of surgical services across England and examine how patient, service and contextual factors affect the delivery of surgical care. The post-holder will be based in London and will take a lead role in the design, conduct and analysis of the qualitative work-stream which will consist of face to face and telephone interviews with women who have urinary incontinence and may be considering surgical intervention. The post-holder will need to have (1) relevant qualifications (a PhD in sociology, social anthropology, or related discipline or substantial relevant research experience), (2) a sound understanding of social science theory and the ability to use this in the interpretation of findings, (3) previous experience in the design, conduct, analysis and publication of qualitative research related to health and medicine, and (4) high level report writing and presentational skills. The post-holder should also be able to work independently, accurately judge priorities, and have excellent organisational and communication skills. The appointment will be full-time for a fixed period ending 31 March 2018. Starting salary will be on the Research Fellow scale grade 6 (from £37,477 pa including London weighting). Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year, pro rata for part time. In addition to this there are discretionary “Director’s Days”.
