Research Assistant (ITD-DCD-04)

Category: Academic | Department: Department of Disease Control | Closing Date: 07 Apr 2016 | We are seeking to appoint a Research Assistant to support the impact evaluation of a community-based intervention trial aimed at improving nutrition and child development.  The intervention project, implemented by Save the Children in rural communities in Southern Mali since 2013, combines two newly–recommended interventions in early childhood: seasonal malaria chemoprevention and home fortification with micronutrient powders. Prior research has shown that these interventions can be beneficial in reducing anaemia and stunting in young children, but the benefits for cognitive and linguistic development are not known. The impact evaluation, which utilises a cluster-randomised trial design across 90 communities, will examine the combined effect of the interventions on malaria infection, anaemia, nutritional status and cognitive performance in children at age 3 and 5 years, after three consecutive years of implementation. The post-holder will play a valuable role in supporting co-ordination of the field surveys and data collection in Mali and preparing the datasets for analysis. They will also assist in the statistical analysis and reporting, and contribute to the preparation of research reports, evidence briefs, and scientific manuscripts for publication. The post holder will work as part on an international team, and collaborate with researchers across a range of disciplines and institutions. The post-holder will be based primarily in London, UK, with a substantial proportion of their time also spent at the trial site in Southern Mali (Sikasso region). They will be expected to work closely with the Principal Investigator in London, as well as Save the Children staff who have been involved in the implementation of the intervention and the survey teams in Mali.   The successful applicant will have a post-graduate qualification in public health, epidemiology or a related discipline, and a strong interest in international health and development. They will have prior experience of working in low-income countries, preferably including practical experience in the implementation of field surveys, questionnaire interviews or cognitive assessments in children, and be competent in handling large data sets and undertaking statistical analysis. They will be a highly organised individual with a proven aptitude for work that requires attention to detail, and able to work independently, with minimal supervision, when necessary. They will also be highly collaborative and a team player, able to work effectively with other disciplines and cultures. A good working knowledge and competence in French (written and oral) is essential.   The post is full time and funded by a grant from the World Bank Strategic Impact Development Fund for a period of 6 months and is available from 1st April 2016 or as soon as possible. Salary is on the Academic Pathway Salary Scale, Grade 5 from £32,647 to £37,477 per annum (inclusive of London Weighting).     Applications should be made online via our website at jobs.lshtm.ac.uk.  The closing date is 7 April 2016 and the reference for this post is ITD-DCD-04.  Online applications will be accepted by the automated system until 10pm on the closing date.  Any queries regarding the application process may be addressed to jobs@lshtm.ac.uk.   The supporting statement section should set out how your qualifications, experience and training meet each of the selection criteria.  Please provide one or more paragraphs addressing each criterion.  The supporting statement is an essential part of the selection process and thus a failure to provide this information will mean that the application will not be considered.  An answer to any of the criteria such as “Please see attached CV” will not be considered acceptable.   Please note that if you are shortlisted and are unable to attend on the interview date it may not be possible to offer you an alternative date.
