When working too much isn't a badge of honor: the difficult reality of workaholism

It's Friday night just after 6, and the Manhattan chapter of Workaholics Anonymous has finished reading the 12 steps aloud and has moved into the sharing portion of the night's meeting.

One woman talks about sneaking around late at night as a child, tiptoeing around her parents' house so they'd never know she was up clocking more hours on her schoolwork.

As an adult, she still has difficulty stopping. Lately, she has been imposing a 10 p.m. deadline on working, but she's having trouble keeping it.

Judging by the nods in the room, she's not alone.
