Marie Curie Early Stage Researcher (MC-EU01)

Other first degrees, e.g. veterinary science, will be considered and a Masters degree in a medical entomology or related subject would be an advantage. The post is funded by the Marie Curie EUROLEISHNET project for a period of 36 months and will commence before 01 September 2015. Salary is at a fixed level of £29,500 per annum, inclusive of mobility allowance, or £33,000 per annum if family allowance is also applicable.   Project: Controlling Sand Fly Vectors of Leishmaniasis The overall aim of this specific project is to develop an optimal attractive toxic sugar bait (ATSB) delivery system for attracting and killing sand flies indoors. The main duties and responsibilities of the postholder will be to undertake appropriate training, including in the safe handling of sand flies and insecticides; rear sand flies for their own experiments; design, implement and analyse behavioural bioassays to determine (1) the optimum sugar bait for attracting sand flies to a point source, and (2) the best killing agent (insecticide) to be used in the attractive toxic sugar bait formulation; data entry, statistical analysis and interpretation of data; preparation of reports and presentations; assist in scientific training networks; source materials and equipment for experiments; general laboratory duties, including preparation of chemicals; attend and contribute to team meetings. Requirements The postholder will be required to register on a PhD programme of research, at the School, to be completed within 36 months of appointment. The submitted PhD thesis, may be based either on a comprehensive description of the research performed or on original research publications, so the postholder will need to make a major contribution to writing of manuscripts including analysing results, writing up results and publishing articles outlining the methodology of the research undertaken. Furthermore, the postholder will be expected to contribute to the academic life of the School as well as contributing to the EUROLEISH-NET. As the research may involve human pathogens and work within BSL 2 laboratories, with related safety issues, and work with rodent models of Leishmania infection, the candidate may be required to attend appropriate training courses and obtain a relevant licence to work (from UK Home Office) with these rodent models.
